ULTRA MODERN GARDEN PROJECT

Case Study: Ultra Modern Garden Project
Location: Upminster, Romford, Essex
Client's Request:
Transform a tired, outdated and deteriorating decking planter and bamboo into one long, solid brick raised planter, and replace the old, tired fence with a new slatted one.

Site:
Slight lateral slope, meaning the planters on one side would be taller but also level with the planters at the higher side of the lawn.
Neighbouring garden elevated and supported by sleeper walls, dictating that the slatted fence would need to be erected on top of the sleeper wall.
Existing bamboo plants with vast root networks to remove.
Neighbouring plants growing through the fence.
One-storey height difference between the front of the house, where materials are delivered, and the back of the house, where the installation is located, with large steps in the alley for bringing waste and materials up and down.
Restricted daytime street parking, increasing the likelihood of parking fines being accumulated throughout the project unless space could be made on the client's drive.

The Pitch:
Two separate planters divided into two different sizes and heights, linked with a floating sleeper bench between the planters.
Upsell:
A small paved patio area in front of the bench for sitting on during winter and to make the planters into a complete feature.
It does get worse before it gets better!

The Plan:
Phase 1
Remove existing decking planter and fence.
Install slatted fence on top of the sleeper retaining wall and paint charcoal black.
Pin weed-control fabric to the back of the slatted fence to stop the neighbour's plants encroaching through the slats.
Install concrete foundations.
Phase 2
Build planters from concrete blocks.
Phase 3
Cement render the lowest outer planters and paint white.
Phase 4
Finish taller planters with dark grey split-face porcelain tiles.
Install Type 1 MOT foundation for paving.
Lay premium grey porcelain paving slabs with premium charcoal block pavers.
Hang the sleeper bench between the planters on hidden iron brackets.
Paint the sleeper bench grey.
Hang bronze Tree of Life ornaments on the slatted fence.
Bed in various plants with a mixture of evergreen planting and a variety of colours.

Time Frame:
This project was spread out over multiple visits.
Phase 1 – Approx. 1 week
Phase 2 – Approx. 1 week
Phase 3 – Approx. 1 day
Phase 4 – Approx. 2 weeks
Total: Approx. 4 weeks over multiple months.

End Result:
A functional, beautiful planter, seating and patio area composed with a perfect blend of clean-cut angles, elevations, crisp corners and colour tones.
Client's Verdict:
Very happy!
